âKerry? Kerry? Oh my God.â Billy jumped down the steps in one go, took off his jacket and placed it over the shivering woman. âUp you come now.â He gently lifted her off the chilly concrete ground.
âMy foot. Iâve hurt my foot,â she wept, then whoosh, she turned her head and projectile vomited, splashing Billyâs trainers and the bottom of his joggers as she did so.
âIâm so sorry,â she wailed. âIâm drunk, Dilly Billon. Dilly Dillon. Drunk.â She then let out a moaning sound and laughed. âAll those Dâs, Dillon, Drunk â Double Dâs like my big wobbly tits.â
Billy couldnât help but smile at the new drunk character revealing itself from behind his sweet amour. Avoiding the pool of sick and with the rain beating down on him too, he sat next to her on the bottom step. âYes. Youâre drunk, really drunk, but itâs OK. Iâm here now. Letâs get you home to bed.â
âI donât want to go to bed.â She burst into tears. âI donât want to go to bed because when I wake up, we have to say goodbye to Grandad Harry, and I donât want to do that.â She groaned again.
Billy bit his lip and pulled her close to him. She was soaking wet and shaking, and she smelled of vomit. âI know, Doll, I know. But you need to get some sleep, you really do, or you will feel awful tomorrow. Come on, letâs get out of here.â
Karaâs head lolled as she kept up her soulful lament. âAnd Iâm sad. Iâm sad because nobody wants me. My mum didnât want me. Even Jago didnât want me. Whatâs wrong with me, Billy?â
âOh Kerry, thereâs nothing wrong with you. They have the problem, your mum and Jago, itâs not you.â He took in her anguished face and soulful green eyes. âIf you could only see what I see, youâd never be sad again. You are SO beautiful.â
âIâm not, Iâm fat and freckly and ginger.â
âNo! Youâre curvaceous, sun-kissed and gorgeous,â Billy shouted above the elements, rain dripping from every feature of his face.
But the troubled girlâs ears remained shut. âAnd I donât want to be on my own forever. Jago said that I was useless, that without him, I would be nothing. Maybe heâs right.â
âJago is a cunt,â Billy said under his breath.
âAh! You said the C word, Iâm telling.â Kara, in her now childlike state, suddenly smirked, then burst into tears again. âMy head is spinning, and my foot really does hurt.â
Guiding her to the small undercover area, Billy managed to sit her on an empty crate. âWhich foot is it?â Kara pointed down to her left one. Ignoring the stench of sick that was coming from her garbling mouth, he carefully eased off her sopping wet plimsoll and sock. Her left little toe was already colouring up red and stuck out at a slight angle. It was quite possibly broken. With the alcohol acting as an anaesthetic, he pushed it gently back into its rightful place, ripped a piece from her sock and tied it to the toe next door.
